Interesting Facts About Ratchet and Clank

Ratchet’s go-to weapon in the widely popular video game Ratchet and Clank is the OmniWrench 8000.

Ratchet and Clank are among the most highly acclaimed gaming duos of the 21st century, along with their rivals Jak and Daxter.

In 2002, the Insomniac gaming company introduced us to an unlikely pair of characters – a mechanic and his robot sidekick – in a science fiction genre, and the rest is history.

We have Sony Computer Entertainment America and Insomniac to thank for countless hours of gaming pleasure.

Ratchet and Clank were initially released on PlayStation 2 and have remained there until two spin-offs, Secret Agent Clank and Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, were added to the PlayStation Portable (PSP).

Ratchet & Clank 1

Ratchet and Clank first appeared in their debut game, Ratchet & Clank.

During the game, Ratchet, a Lombax mechanic, discovers a damaged robot on his home planet of Veldin.

He names the robot Clank and learns that he is a “malfunctioned” robot who escaped from the assembly line.

Clank reveals that Chairman Drek of the Blarg race plans to build a new planet to live on, but he must destroy other planets to do so.

Clank believes that only the superhero Captain Qwark can save them, and the duo sets out to find him and save the world.

Locked and Loaded

Ratchet & Clank 2: Locked and Loaded picks up where the first game left off, with the dynamic duo becoming celebrities.

They are kidnapped by Abercrombie Fizzwidget, the owner and creator of Megacorp, to retrieve an experiment that turns out to be a deadly pet.

Fizzwidget, who is really disgraced hero Captain Qwark in disguise, planned to release the “Protopet” to save the world from destruction and become a hero once again.

Up Your Arsenal

In Ratchet & Clank 3: Up Your Arsenal, Ratchet’s home planet of Veldin is attacked by a new villain, Dr. Nefarious, a robotic mad scientist who hates “squishes” like Ratchet.

Ratchet and Clank must once again find Captain Qwark and work with him to defeat the mad robot, who plans to turn all the citizens of the planets into robots and destroy all organic forms of life.

Other Ratchet & Clank Games

The game series continues to thrive with Ratchet: Gladiator, an arcade-style fighting game in which Ratchet, Clank, and their friend Al are captured and forced to fight and complete challenges in arenas by the new villain, Gleeman Vox.

This is the first of the games to introduce multiplayer capabilities.

The PS3 introduced a Future Trilogy, in which players learn more about Ratchet’s origins and are immersed in time travel and pirate themes.

Each game continues from the last and follows Ratchet as he tries to save the world (once again) and rescue his friend Clank.

In all of the games, Ratchet relies on his trusty OmniWrench 8000, but he must also purchase additional weapons, such as guns and bomb gloves.

In the initial game, upgrading is not an option unlike in the sequel and the succeeding games where it is a recurring feature. Ratchet needs to acquire bolts, which serve as the game’s currency, to purchase his weapons. These bolts are distributed in various locations and are contained in destructible crates, and can also be obtained by defeating enemies.
