Interesting Facts about 5 Seconds of Summer

When the famous pop-rock band 5 Seconds of Summer had their first gig, only 20 people showed up.

Often referred to as Australia’s One Direction, 5 Seconds of Summer is a pop-rock band comprising of four members: Luke Hemmings (lead vocalist and guitarist), Michael Clifford (guitarist and vocalist), Calum Hood (bass guitarist and vocalist), and Ashton Irwin (drummer and vocalist).

Originally formed on April 3, 2011, the band posted videos of themselves performing popular songs on Luke’s YouTube channel before gaining Sony’s attention, who signed them to a publishing deal in 2012.

The boys attended Norwest Christian College in Sydney and their biggest musical inspirations include Blink 182, All Time Low, Ed Sheeran, and Boys Like Girls.

Whilst busking at Hyde Park in Sydney, a fan gave the band a giant poo toy and Michael, Calum, and Luke once played a set without pants on to a crowd full of drunk people in their Lobby in London.

Their first single, “Out of My Limit,” was released on November 19, 2012, and received over 100,000 views on YouTube within 24 hours of release.

Originally titled “Over the Limit,” the song had to be changed as it sounded like it was about alcohol. Niall Horan from One Direction even tweeted a link to the video on its release date.

Despite their success, the band doesn’t have an official fandom name, but their fans often refer to themselves as the 5SOSFam or 5sosers.

Ashton Irwin is the oldest member of the band, and before they got together, there was mutual hate between him and the original members, but now they’re like brothers.

The boys have admitted that they like to follow people with 5SOS in their Twitter name or bio and say that one of the best parts about being in the band is meeting their fans.
