The chili gets its name from its scorpion-like stinger located at the pepper’s tip and the ‘Butch T’ section is due to Butch Taylor labelling each batch of seeds he sold with his first name and last initial.

7 Pot Primo – 1,473,480 SHU

The 7 Pot Primo, developed by Louisianan Primo or Troy Primeaux, is the fourth spiciest chili on our list with 1,473,480 SHU.

It’s a cross between the Trinidad 7 Pot and Naga Morich and has a menacing appearance with its strange skinny ‘tail.’

One diner even described it as tasting like sucking on battery acid.

7 Pot Douglah – 1,853,936 SHU

The 7 Pot Douglah, also known as the Chocolate 7 Pot, is one of the most flavorful of the hottest peppers and comes in at number 3 with 1,853,936 SHU.

Originating in Trinidad, the name apparently comes from the fact that one pod will be enough to spice seven pots of stew.

Trinidad Moruga Scorpion – 2,000,000 SHU

The Trinidad Moruga Scorpion or Moruga Blend is the second spiciest chili with 2,000,000 SHU.

This pepper was given the title of world’s hottest chili in 2012 and is revered among many chili-heads.

Although it wasn’t recognized by Guinness, its heat just seems to keep growing with every bite.

Carolina Reaper – 2,200,000 SHU

The Smokin’ Ed’s Carolina Reaper or HP22BNH7 is the World’s Hottest Pepper recognized by the Guinness World Records. It was bred by Ed Currie from PuckerButt Pepper Company in South Carolina for its heat but surprisingly has a good taste as well. The Reaper is a hybrid of a Pakistani Naga and a Red Savina Habanero with a Scoville rating of 1.5 million. One batch, known as HP22B “High Power, Pot 22, Plant B,” has even reached 2.2 million SHU, which is higher than U.S. police issue Pepper Spray that ranges from 2.5 million to 5.3 million Scoville units.

While many think that the Ghost Pepper or Bhut Jolokia is the world’s hottest chili, it doesn’t even make it into the top 5 and hardly into the top 10. When it comes to higher Scoville units, you get into the world of pure capsaicin, which is concentrated spice. Pure Crystal Capsaicin, for example, is sold on one site and breaks the scale at 16 million Scoville.

As someone who can barely handle Jalapeno, I couldn’t even imagine trying any of the top 10.
